Sonic Boom: Rock Songs

It was like more than a month when I last shared you some tunes here in Sonic Boom. Did you miss it? I bet not. Haha! The last song I posted was Arctic Monkeys’ track from their Leave Before the Lights Come On EP called Baby I’m Yours. I like that song a lot, because of the folk rock melody it leaves in my ears. My boyfriend also sings along with it now, because I’ve been pestering him to listen to it. I told him we’re going to play it on our wedding reception. VAVOOM!

I’ve been having a dose of smooth music lately so that I get an excuse to play them using our DVD player in the living room, and that made me miss rock so much. As I mentioned before, my family isn’t into rock music. In fact, they despise it. That situation made my heart grow fonder for my most-loved genre. It’s been a long while since I last had a rock music sound trip, so now I’ll be spoiling myself with it through this post. I’ll be sharing you three of my favourite rock songs from then and now. Here they are:

I love Juneau because it’s very easy to the ears. The melody is also very catchy and captivating. About Eyes Set to Kill, I like it mainly because of their lovely lady lead vocals. It makes me believe that I can also be a band singer because I think I can dress and sing like her. Please just support my illusion. LOL! Their songs are not very hard to sing, well except for the screams of course. About Sexual Man Chocolate, I absolutely love its piano intro. The breakdowns are also superb. My boyfriend explained how Attack! Attack! Might have done it, and I’m pretty much amazed.

day 30 – your favorite song at this time last year

I didn't have that much of significant happenings in my life this time last year, as usual. It was also summer time a year ago, and I just stayed at home. I didn't have some memorable activities or whatsoever, well, except for my first time to vote for a national automated election. I felt really proud that I exercised my right. I felt like I made a big difference, although I’m not sure if I actually did. So far, I still don’t regret voting for those people I think are worthy to rule and lead the people.

Maybe you’re thinking that my favorite song last year was ABS-CBN’s Boto Mo, Ipatrol Mo theme song called Ako ang Simula in relation to what I just shared. No, it’s not. But I have to admit that also liked it at some point. The song promotes social awareness, and it was played on TV almost all the time for recall. The result – I had LSS, but as I said, it wasn’t the song that got me hooked last summer. Instead, it was Franco’s Song for the Suspect. It’s one of the best Pinoy rock songs I’ve ever heard.

I bet you already know that Franco is a band composed of different musicians from other Philippine rock bands such as Urbandub, Parokya ni Edgar, Queso and Inyo. They’ve joint their forces to give one love jah love to every rock music lover in town. They just performed live at Jickong’s here in Davao last year. Too bad, I wasn’t able to watch them. So now, let’s lend our ears for Franco Reyes (Inyo) on vocals and guitars, Gabby Alipe (Urbandub) and Paolo 8 Toleran (Queso) on guitars, Buwi Meneses (Parokya ni Edgar) on bass and JanJan Mendoza (Urbandub) on drums.

At long last! I’m finally done with my first blog challenge. I wasn’t able to write them consecutively because of some inevitable circumstances, but still, I managed to finish it somehow. That’s what matters most, right? I give you my heartfelt gratitude for sharing your thoughts on those tracks that I posted. Songs evoke certain memory. Thank you for coming along with me in my musical ride as I relive my memorable moments, and as I learn more about my real choice of tunes. So long, 30 Days of Music! day 22 – a song that you listen to when you’re sad

You would know that I’m sad when I don’t speak to anyone, when I stare blankly at one corner, and when I just curl up on the bed even at unlikely times. I keep my loneliness to myself. I don’t try to show it to everybody. I don’t talk to other people about my sorrow and grief. I don’t know why, but I just feel like I don’t have a reason to share my misery to others. They can’t do something to ease the pain anyway. They also have other problems for sure, and I don’t want to trouble them with my depressing sentiments. I believe that only I can understand myself better.

What do I do when I’m sad? Of course, I figure out what are those things that make me smile. I make the sadness go away by doing those stuffs that I love. I eat my favorite meal, I think of happy memories, I take pictures, I write my thoughts in my journal, and most of all, I overdose myself with those tunes from my favorite bands. I find solace whenever I listen to my favorite songs. Sound trip is one of the best things that I can do to delight myself. Music is indeed my best friend.

This track from Saosin called You’re not Alone is one of those that I listen to the most when I’m very sad. I love this song a lot, because it makes me feel like I’m really not alone in my life’s journey. Geez, that sounds so melodramatic. If I’m not mistaken, You’re not Alone is the last record Saosin had with their former front man back in 2006. That information is brought to you by Ciovic the Grappler. day 19 – a song from your favorite album

This task is definitely giving me a headache, literally. I have a lot of favorite albums from different music genre, and it’s hard to choose only one among them. I’m in two minds whether to post this or that. I tried to make up my mind, and it seems like I can only shilly shally. So to stop myself from ranting about this simple stuff, I’ve decided to just post one song from each of my three favorite albums. I guess that would be much better.

The first song is from the album Old World Underground: Where are you? The song’s called On a Slow Night by one of the bands that I love because of the female vocalist – Metric. I like this song because it sounds smooth and pleasing despite the electric guitar accompaniment. It can also pass for a song that makes me fall asleep.

The second song is from the album Season of Poison from a synthpop/electronic band, Shiny Toy Guns. The song’s called Ghost Town. I love this album because almost all the tracks sound good. About Ghost Town, I like it mainly because it’s funky, and it’s not heavy. I can listen to it with family who’s not into rock music unlike me.

The third song is called Smokahontas by Attack! Attack! from their self-titled album. I just love all the songs from this band to beat! I still couldn’t get enough of their party-core music. For me, they’re the best modern band. I salute them for trying to experiment on their craft. That makes them the most popular band combining heavy metal and electronic. Long live rock!

day 11 - a song from your favorite band

First and foremost, I'd like to say my favorite band is Attack! Attack! from Ohio. It's a popcore/partycore band who began crabbing it up in 2009 (as far as I know) under Rise Records. Their music is a combination of dubsteps which is an electronic dance music and hardcore breakdowns. I'm actually a big fan of this new breed of music.

I got to know Attack! Attack! when they became a part of Punk Goes Pop 2, a compilation album released by Fearless Records. They covered Katy Perry's I Kissed a Girl. I was quite impressed with their distinct electronica version! From then on, I began following them by downloading Someday Came Suddenly and a self-titled album.

My favorite songs from A!A! include Stick Stickly, Smokahontas and Sexual Man Chocolate. But this song I'm going to share is from their latest album. I chose this because it's not very heavy. I like it because the keyboard solos, auto-tuned singing and breakdowns sound lovely when combined. It's called Lonely. Have you heard of this, folks?

Supersonic Explosion -- Rock On!

Among all other music genres, rock music is my number one choice. I like it because for some reason, not everyone gets to appreciate rock. It kind of feels good to know that only a few like what you're hooked to. Do you ever get that feeling? Whenever I feel like downloading songs, I always think of prioritizing rock bands in my list. Listening to them makes me feel like I'm not a timid girl or something. It also helps me bring out my anxieties just by singing along with my endeared post-hardcore and heavy metal bands. This kind of music invigorates my soul, so to speak. It may sound too turbulent for some, but for a rockphile like me, rock is music to my ears.

A few months ago, I've posted about how I learned to love rock. In case you still haven't read about it, I'm providing you this link. I also mentioned about NU 107's closing. That was one of the saddest news I've known last year. But just recently, I found out from Francis Brew's Twitter Page that the management actually opened a new rock station by the name of DIG Radio. It's both a good and a bad news. Good news because the home of rock on the radio springs back to life. Bad news because the frequency is not available here in Davao City. But you can also tune in and listen to your favorite DJs online via this site. Good thing!

I have at most 3GB worth of rock music files in my virtual folder. Too bad I lost some of them when we had our PC reformatted just last month. Too bad I wasn't able to back it up. Darn! Now I'm beginning to download all the lost albums again. What a tedious thing to do, but I have to do it because as I said, I love rock. When you love something that bad, you have to do everything when you know you can still get it back. LOL! I really intended to sound that cheesy. My apologies. Can't help but laugh at my own bloody hell sentiments. Anyway, because I'm feeling like a rock star at this very late hour, I'm going to give you this list of rock songs that I've been binging aurally these days. Girly meets rocker. Enjoy!

What rock songs do you have in your music library?

Invigorating the Soul (Rock Music)

I’m a rockphile. I’ve been arming myself with hardcore music ever since. I love rock music, but I don’t even know how to play at least one musical instrument. Whenever someone finds out that I actually listen to some hardcore anthems, I’m instantly asked whether I can play the guitar or whatsoever. I feel so embarrassed answering that question. Do I really need to show that I could jam with a band just to prove that I’m a rock fanatic? I apologize for getting emotional again.

I’ve been devoted to rock music since third year high school. I was fifteen years old then. That time, I used to listen to Pinoy Pop Rock songs, which I loathe now. Good thing someone introduced me to the Home of Nu Rock, NU 107. It’s my ultimate favorite radio station. But a couple of months ago, its management decided to stop the operations. That’s one of the saddest news I’ve got last year. I hope they’ll come back with a bang someday.

Because of NU 107, I got familiar with some foreign bands like Taking Back Sunday, Anberlin, Shiny Toy Guns, Avenged Sevenfold, Rage Against the Machine, Deftones and City Sleeps; and local bands like Urbandub, Typecast, Faspitch, Franco, Queso and some Red Horse Muziklaban Bands. I kept up with this station because it gives me additional information on the rock bands I follow the most. I never dare to miss out a single day without having my fix of Stairway to Seven, NU’s daily countdown on the most requested rock songs. The Remote Control Weekend was another I program I frequented in NU. Avid listeners can request for songs of different rock genres guaranteed to blow their ears out.

My enthusiasm for rock music grew fonder when I met my boyfriend, Ciovic. He was the drummer of an underground post-hardcore band from Cotabato City. He really had a great taste for rock. He just doesn’t like the songs he adores, he plays them as well. As what one of his friends told me, he is a double-edged drummer. Of course as his girlfriend, I couldn’t help but be blown away with what he can do. He’s that good, in fact he is the best drummer I’ve ever seen play. He can perfectly perform tracks from As I Lay Dying, Saosin, Bullet for my Valentine, Mudvayne, Funeral for a Friend, Valley of Chrome and from other heavy metal royalties. Is that enough to bloat your ego, Mr. Ciovic David Sol Balabbo?

Taken almost three years ago.

I am really not much of a screamo fan. I feel somehow battered whenever I listen to songs that are full scream and full grunge. I just like to listen to songs whose lyrics are clear. A rock song can still be a hot stuff with less scream and more hardcore breakdowns. That is why I couldn’t get enough of A Day to Remember, Asking Alexandria, Escape the Fate, Eyes Set to Kill, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, Chevelle, Katatonia and A Skylit Drive. I can play their songs nonstop at top volume!

Just last 2009, I found out that some of my favorite rock bands recorded a compilation of their pop songs cover. The album is called Punk Goes Pop. I wasn’t able to download their first album, but I have the second and the latest one. There are also some pop cover songs that were recorded, but are not included in the said album. If only pop songs are just played the Punk Goes Pop way, I would definitely be a party animal. No doubt! The pop versions are terrific. Superb, I have to say! Hardcore bands made those pop songs sound way better! I suggest you listen to A Day to Remember’s Over My Head, The Word Alive’s Heartless, Woe is Me’s Tik Tok and Red Summer Tape’s Hot n Cold. You’ll know what I mean.

Punk Goes Pop rocks!

I love rock music because not everyone likes it. I don’t like listening to songs that are everyone’s favorite. I like songs that are loved by few. But don’t get me wrong. I don’t listen to rock songs to signify my alienation from the government, and to signify my angst against the society. I even don’t have the slightest feeling of any of those two that I’ve just mentioned. I listen to rock songs, because I just like it. Period. But of course I still have some light and easy music in my play list from Aqualung, Metric, The Bird and the Bee, 311, Tori Amos, Rilo Kiley and The Pipettes. That is to balance the emotions I get from my library of music. With that, I would say music makes me sane, because music is LOVE! J

Scream Aim Fire by Bullet for my Valentine!!! It is actually a Hardcore rock tune to blow your ears out!!! I heard it on NU 107.This is an amazing song. I love the drum beats. It's just so heavy. I wish someone could play it for me live. Can it be you, Mr. Balabbo? Please do it for me. :-)
